- "According to legend, no Sodan has been indentured to a Goa'uld for over five thousand years."
- — Daniel Jackson
The Sodan have kept alive many of the traditions their ancestors, highly valuing honor and ritual. Should a warrior die at another's hands, the murderer will be required to take part in the ritual battle of Kel shak lo allowing any blood kin of the warrior seek recompense. When a warrior dies a honorable death the Rite of Shel mak assah is performed. Raiding of Goa'uld strongholds are considered rites of passage for young Sodan warriors. The Sodan also highly value spirituality, hoping to follow in the footsteps of the Ancients. (SG1: "Babylon")
- "The writings of our gods instructed us how to construct many of their devices. We use them to protect our sacred ground."
- — Jolan
The Sodan still have some Goa'uld technology such as Staff weapons but also constructed their own technology, using instructions left by the Ancients, such as cloaking devices. Apart from this the Sodan live relatively free from technology only using the Eye of the Gods to transport themselves to the Stargate in order to take out raids on other planets. (SG1: "Babylon")
The Sodan were once an elite force used by the Goa'uld Ishkur, however they discovered he was not a god but an imposter. Ishkur tried to have them killed, but they fought back and fled. The Sodan set out to find Kheb but were unable to, settling instead on P9G-844. The Sodan would perform raids on Goa'uld strongholds in order to gain symbiotes for implantation and found Ancient writings which instructed them in the construction of cloaking devices. The Sodan remained relatively isolated not taking part in any of the battles against the other Goa'uld by the Jaffa, until a team from Stargate Command arrived looking for them, which they ambushed, as they had entered their sacred land. (SG1: "Babylon")
The Sodan were contacted by a Prior who told them of the Ori. Believing them to be the gods they had been looking for, the Sodan converted to Origin. When the Sodan were told to kill a group of people who refused Origin, they journeyed to the planet and found simple farmers, so they disobeyed the Prior and went to another world rumored to have fought back, finding everyone dead from a mysterious disease. Realizing that the Ori were not gods due to the actions of the Priors, the Sodan rejected Origin. Continuing to appear to work for the Priors, they helped Stargate Command captured a Prior. Some time later, another Prior came across Volnek informing him that the Sodan had committed treason against the Ori and infected him. Volnek become a mindless animal and killed all of the Sodan, only Haikon survived the slaughter. (SG1: "The Fourth Horseman, Part 2", "Arthur's Mantle")
