The Ancients, also known as the Gate builders or in Ancient as the Anquietas, were an evolution of the Ancients during their time spent in the Milky Way galaxy when they built the Stargate Network.

Overview

Physiology

The Ancients had a more complex DNA structure which developed over many millenia, resulting in more advanced cognitive abilities. The Ancients also had the ability to heal themselves and others of fatal wounds or virulent diseases, some also developed advanced mental abilities such telekinesis. The Ancients also had a specific genetic marker in their DNA. (SG1: "Frozen", "Lost City, Part 2", "Avalon, Part 1")

Very little is known about the Ancients' culture in the Milky Way. They constructed their cities of stone but with technology interlaced, usually decorated them with ornate writings about their history or their signature curved line designs (which the Goa'uld appropriated into their own), some of their structures had columns and monolithic monuments. These strucutres were very complex and extensive, with hidden areas everywhere. (SG1: "Window of Opportunity", "Fallen")

The Ancients created much of their advanced technology while in the Milky Way, most notably the Stargates which they set up a vast network throughout the galaxy. They also built Destiny and the Stargate Seed ships which they sent out into the universe. During this time they built their massive capital city on Earth, Atlantis, housed within were their most advanced technologies. When the plague swept through the galaxy the Ancients they pooled all of their knowledge together and created a repository of their entire knowledge to pass on to their next generation, humans when they were sufficiently advanced. History

Arrival

The Alterans fled from their home galaxy in their ship and after many years came to the Milky Way. They first landed on Dakara before spreading out into the galaxy, building an great civilization, constructing cities and outposts on many worlds and creating some of their most advanced technologies. They discovered the cosmic background microwave radiation and built Destiny and the Stargate Seed ships, sending them out in to the universe. The Stargates

The Ancients built the Stargates and created a massive network. The original versions of the Stargates deployed by the seed ships were limited in both range and sophistication so they Ancients replaced them in the Milky Way with more advanced versions. The allowed for anyone to access these gates with the DHD to travel to other worlds. (SG1: "The Fifth Race", SGU: "Air, Part 1", "Air, Part 2")

The Plague

"That device was originally used by the Ancients to create life in the Milky Way. Well, recreate it, after the whole plague thing."

At some point a plague swept across the galaxy killing most of the life, particularly the Ancients. This plague caused organ failure among the Ancients and killed off most of their population. Some scientists built a time machine in order to travel back and prevent the disease, however it didn't work so they shut their experiment down and let the end come. Several Ancients survived and receded to Atlantis. They used a device on Dakara to reseed the galaxy with life and then left in Atlantis and headed for the Pegasus galaxy.
