Vanessa James is a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force previously stationed on Icarus Base. In 2009, during a surprise attack led by the Lucian Alliance, she along with 80+ other members of the base were forced to evacuate through the Stargate to the Ancient vessel Destiny.

Biography
Early life
James was born in 1983 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She joined the United States Air Force and became part of the special forces and served in Iraq before being transferred to the Stargate Program and to Icarus Base. (SGU: "Air, Part 3", "Darkness", "Blockade")
Icarus Base
While serving on Icarus Base James started a sexual relationship with Lieutenant Matthew Scott, a fellow officer, breaking the rules of Air Force conduct. When the Lucian Alliance attacked the base, she, along with 80+ others, were forced to evacuate through the Stargate and ended up on the Ancient vessel Destiny. (SGU: "Air, Part 1", "Air, Part 3")
Destiny
After arriving on Destiny, James was part of a team to search the ship, Lt. Scott tried to comfort her in this time but she told him that it was not the time for such discussions. When Lt. Scott's team was lost offworld James went to search for him and returned shortly before Destiny was to go back into FTL having not found Scott, luckily however he managed to get back to the gate in time. While on Destiny James recorded a video message about how she did not want to die so far out into the universe. She was part of a group that believed that Colonel Young and Dr. Rush were keeping the true nature about when and if they could return to Earth a secret and so managed to charm Eli Wallace into going off with her where he was confronted by this group. During the power outage on the ship, James heard a noise outside her quarters and came out to find a Kino nearby piloted by Eli and Sgt. Riley only to realise that she wasn't wearing any pants and figured that they were spying on her, so she threatened to hurt them. (SGU: "Darkness")
When it was discovered that the ship was headed towards a star a lottery was announced and James was one of the 15 picked to evacuate on the Ancient shuttle. Luckily however the ship was merely headed to the star to recharge and she rejoined those on board. Later when James was about to take a shower James found another Kino hovering in the corner of the room, obviously to watch her take a shower, and covered it with her shirt. James found Lt. Scott making out with Chloe Armstrong, while looking for him and was somewhat bitter towards them both. Later she went to inform Chloe that Scott had become trapped in a crevasse offworld looking for water. (SGU: "Light", "Covered Kino", "Water")
James was part of a team that traveled offworld and soon discovered a crashed alien vessel. Some time later she was on the observation deck and witnessed the arrival of a large alien ship and during the ships attack on Destiny, James helped to stop an electrical overload by shutting down a circuit on the ship. Later when Eli, Chloe and Lt. Scott were trapped offworld underground and James went to try to get them out, however their attempts caused a cave in and further trapped the them, forcing them to leave the planet. When Destiny dropped out of FTL later on, she was part of a team that went back through the Stargate to try to relocate the planet again, however they were unable to do so. James then volunteers to switch places with a hyperdrive specialist, Dr. Amanda Perry, however due to Perry's disabilities, James was unable to cope with it and quickly cut the connection and returned to her own body, accidently knocking the communication stone off of the terminal. Another stone, in Dr. Rush's possession, who had been captured by the Nakai, was used by one of them who took control of James' body and sabotaged one of Destiny's FTL engines. She then took care of Jeremy Franklin and notices when he says "chair", meaning the neural interface chair, and let Young know. (SGU: "Sabotage")
A new galaxy
When in a new galaxy, James was affected by a Tick-like parasite who made her hallucinate that she had sex with Lt. Scott and then killed him out of jealousy over Chloe. After the Lucian Alliance took control of Destiny, James was part of the group sent offworld to a barely habitable planet. Here James was sent to locate shelter for the survivors and found a series of caves. A violent lightning storm started and a lightning strike hit the ground and threw James back, causing her minor injuries. After returning to Destiny, James was part of a team to use the shuttle to travel to a nearby planet in search of supplies. (SGU: "Pain", "Intervention", "Aftermath")
James released the Lucian Alliance prisoners from the hold and they were partnered with marine guards. James then helped the others locate Chloe, finding her in a storage room trying to open a case. When Lt. Scott was infected by an alien organism, James was part of the hallucination he had, she was an ex-girlfriend. After Ginn was found murdered, James used the communication stones to report to Earth and found that Dr. Perry, who had switched with Ginn, also dead. When Ginn's murdered, Simeon escaped offworld James was part of a team with Torres and Weber to attempt to track him down, however she was injured by one of Simeon's traps. When Destiny came under attack, James manned a station on the bridge, controlling power distribution on the shield emitters. When Eli's plan to dial Earth was being implemented, James talked to the others about being back on Earth and her dislike of Rodney McKay. When Volker needed a transplant, James assisted TJ in the surgery. When Dr. McKay was brought on board to look over Eli's calculations, James was annoyed at McKay's interest in her chest. When offworld looking for supplies, James was happy at the prospect of having some meat for food on board. After the group was attacked James feared that TJ and Reynolds were dead, but still participated in the search for them. When the rescue team is attacked as well, James' shoulder is dislocated and Greer helps her to pop it back in, however she was unable to continue with the search. When the crew discovered a colony from their alternate selves new world, Novus, James helped to co-ordinate the supplies being brought back. (SGU: "The Hunt", "Common Descent")
While Destiny recharged in a blue supergiant and everyone had to be relocated offworld due to the increased radiation and heat, James and the others found themselves on an abandoned world. James was left in charge of the civilians who stayed near the gate while others went to look for supplies. When Morrison found a newspaper about a attack on the planet and tried to leave using the Stargate, James knocked him out, breaking his nose, however the drones were alerted to their presence anyway. James then used her radio to draw the drone close and Varro shot it down. James helped defend Destiny from the drones when it tried to recharge in a star, however unable to recharge the crew had to go into stasis. James hugged Eli goodbye and said farewells to the others and was put in stasis. (SGU: "Blockade", "Gauntlet")

James is a highly trained member of the special forces of the United States Air Force and as such is trained in various weapons and tactics. She has demonstrated skill at tracking through various terrain and techniques in tactical deployments. During her time on Destiny she developed skills in controlling some of Destiny's systems such as weapons fire, sensor control and power distribution, as well as gaining knowledge on Ancient systems and probably some minimal knowledge on Ancient language. - In an alternate timeline, James was part of a team that traveled offworld to gather supplies. The team was quarantined there when it was discovered that some of them were sick and during the night they were attacked by alien creatures and James was one of those killed. (SGU: "Time")
- In a subsequent timeline, James contracted the same sickness on board Destiny and died along with the rest of the crew. (SGU: "Time")
- In an alternate timeline, James volunteered to remain on Destiny instead of returning to Earth, however she was forced to go through the gate when Destiny was on the verge of destruction and ended up on another planet and then relocated to Novus.
