Unas
From Stargate Wiki
- "Unas is believed to have been the first host, born of the same primordial waters as the Goa'uld. He became a myth, much like your Vampyr."
- — Teal'c
Unas, Goa'uld for "first ones", are a bipedal, sentient species inhabiting several worlds in the Milky Way and originating from the same world as the Goa'uld. These creatures served as the first hosts and slaves for the Goa'uld.

Overview
Biology
- "The old stories say Unas had great regenerative powers."
- — Teal'c
Unas are large bipedal, tough species, significantly stronger and more resilient than Humans. They have tough heads with ridged cranial folds running over, facial horns that grow out from the chin, yellow eyes, sharp teeth and four-fingered clawed hands. They also possess regenerative abilities beyond that of a human. Their blood is bright green (SG1: "Thor's Hammer")
Social Structure
The Unas exist in primitive tribal societies led by a dominant alpha male leader, usually the biggest and strongest, such leadership can be challenged by other males, usually resulting in the death of one of them. The Unas society appears to have some ritualistic qualities such as sacred sites and loud, public mourning of death. Their society values honor.
Their society has changed based on their history - the Unas on P3X-888 were weary of the dangers that the Goa'uld symbiote hold and steer clear from the waters they dwell in. Unas on P3X-403 wore bone necklaces designed to prevent symbiotes from burrowing into them and taking control, despite their being no native symbiotes on the planet, indicating that they may serve a more ceremonial or ritualistic purpose. (SG1: "The First Ones", "Enemy Mine")
Language
- "I've also been able to categorize over 70 different words from their ... language."
- — Daniel Jackson
- Main article: Unas language
Despite being somewhat primitive and often being referred to as such, the Unas have their own complex language. This language appears to spread across most Unas groups and also seems to be the basis for the Goa'uld language.
Technology
The Unas do not rely on technology in their daily life. They have no such technology of their own nor use any industrial techniques to obtain materials for any use. While many of them have access to advanced technology such as staff weapons they do not use them as they were once used as means of enslavement and torture of their species by the Goa'uld. If given the opportunity to use technology some Unas have taken use of them. (SG1: "Beast of Burden", "Enemy Mine")
History
The Unas evolved from the same primordial waters as the Goa'uld on P3X-888. The Goa'uld eventually took the Unas as hosts and learned how to use the Stargate taking with them other Unas as slaves. The Unas served as the hosts for the Goa'uld for an unknown amount of time until the System Lord Ra discovered Earth and began to use Humans. The Unas were eventually phased out in favor of the humans and Jaffa. (SG1: "The First Ones")
The Unas remained fairly hidden for thousands of years only being used sparingly by the Goa'uld. The System lord Sokar used a Goa'ulded-Unas to harvest hosts on a planet where Christianity was present for many years as the mere sight of an Unas struck fear into the inhabitants. At least one Goa'ulded-Unas managed to get trapped in the labyrinth on Cimmeria and remained there until 1997 when he was killed by Teal'c. (SG1: "Thor's Hammer")
SG-1 visited a planet where Sokar's Unas harvested hosts and tried to convince the people that he was not a demon but a creature and they did not have to live in fear. With SG-1's help a villager managed to help kill the Unas, however the symbiote had escaped into another host. Sokar is also believed to have used more Unas on Netu to serve as torturers and to make the place seem more menacingly. (SG1: "Demons", "Serpent's Song")
While on an archaeological survey on the Unas homeworld, Daniel Jackson was kidnapped by an Unas, named Chaka, and discovered that the Unas had their own language, a complex society and ritualistic qualities. Daniel was taken to an Unas tribal group and Chaka actually defended him against the other Unas and actually won against the alpha male taking control of the group. (SG1: "The First Ones")
Discovering that Chaka was kidnapped by humans, SG-1 goes to a world where the Unas populations are enslaved by humans to be used as beast of burden and domestic slaves. Freeing Chaka led SG-1 to helping him start an Unas rebellion on the planet which resulted in a their eventual freedom and a tenuous relationship between them. Chaka was later instrumental in convincing a tribe of Unas on P3X-403 to allow the Tau'ri contingent to live and even wanted to help mine the Naquadah needed to make weapons to fight the Goa'uld. (SG1: "Beast of Burden", "Enemy Mine")
