The Shavadai, also known as the People of the Steppe, are a Simarkan tribe on Simarka.
Overview
Daniel Jackson believed that the Shavadai were descendants of the Mongolian Chagatai tribe and stated that their traditions and customs have changed very little in 900 years. One of the customs was their treatment of women as property and repression, which until the arrival of SG-1 when the custom was abandoned. The Shavadai also have a very potent local anesthetic, some of which was taken back by SG-1. (SG1: "Emancipation")
History
The Shavadai were part of the humans taken from Earth to Simarka, most likely by the Goa'uld, who eventually abandoned them. When SG-1 arrived on Simarka they saved Abu, son of the tribe leader Moughal, from a pack of dogs and were taken to his tribe. There they learned of the oppression of their women and took part in a celebration with the Shavadai.
During the night, Abu kidnapped Carter to trade her for another woman. Moughal took the rest of SG-1 after her and discovered she had been taken to the Tugai and had already been traded. They traded a gun for Carter but had to return to save the life of a girl who Carter helped escape. The Tugai leader, Turghan was challenged by law to a fight to the death, but refused to fight Moughal.
Instead Carter took his place and defeated Turghan, letting him live. As a remembrance for Carter, the Shavadai allowed their women to show their faces in public. (SG1: "Emancipation")
