Biography

Early life

A young Carter

Carter was born to Jacob Carter, a United States Air Force General, in 1968. She has a brother Mark and two children, a boy and a girl. When Samantha was a teenager her mother was killed in a car accident while taking a taxi back home; after her father had failed to arrive on time to pick her mother up. Sam blamed her father for her mothers death and was against entering the Air Force like her father. (SG1: "Entity", "Seth", "The Devil You Know")

She eventually forgave her father for this and joined the Air Force, service number 366349. Exceptionally bright, Carter ranked in the top of every class she was in and won every award she went for, earning quite a reputation at the Air Force Academy. She eventually gained a Ph.D. in Astrophysics. During the Gulf war she logged over 100 hours in enemy airspace. She went to work at The Pentagon before working on the Stargate Program studying the Stargate for two years. (SG1: "Prodigy", "Children of the Gods")

SG-1

Carter was reassigned from the Pentagon to be on the mission to go back through the Stargate, joining Colonel O'Neill's team. While on Abydos, Carter and the others were taken to a cartouche chamber and postulate the existence of Stargates across the galaxy. Returning to Earth, Carter fed the data from the cartouche into the dialing computer and it began to calculate new addresses. Carter was assigned to SG-1 and went offworld to Chulak to try to rescue Sha're and Skaara. (SG1: "Children of the Gods")

When on Simarka Carter was kidnapped and sold off to a rival tribe, later beign freed and then challenged the rival tribe leader, Turghan, to a fight to free a young girl. Later when offworld to uncover what happened to SG-9, she found her ex-fiancée, the team commander, to have gone insane and taken power over the natives and attempted to talk him down. When traveling to a planet near a black hole, the team found the entire civilization had been killed except for a young girl who bonded with Carter and when it was discovered that the girl had a bomb implanted in her, Carter refused to leave her alone to die. (SG1: "Emancipation", "The First Commandment", "Singularity")

Jolinar takes over

While helping to evacuate people who were being attacked by the Goa'uld, Carter was taken over by a Tok'ra symbiote, Jolinar of Malkshur, who later gave her life to save Carter and left Carter with many of her memories and knowledge as well as the protein marker in her DNA which allowed her to use Goa'uld technology like the hand device. For her part in destroying two motherships Apophis sent to Earth, Carter received the Air Medal. She used her knowledge of the Tok'ra to help track them down. (SG1: "In the Line of Duty", "Need", "Thor's Chariot", "Secrets", "The Tok'ra, Part 1", "The Tok'ra, Part 2")

Carter was promoted to Major and later had to go to rescue her father who had been captured by Sokar, using Jolinar's memories, she was able to ascertain how Jolinar had escaped from Sokar's prison moon, Netu. Carter and Teal'c joined O'Neill on board Thor's ship in orbit of Earth that was infested with Replicators and helped to stop them. Following this she went to Othala to help them with their Replicator problems. (SG1: "Fair Game", "Jolinar's Memories", "The Devil You Know", "Nemesis", "Small Victories")

Carter, Daniel and O'Neill wore advanced armbands which increased their strength, speed and stamina. While using these armbands they became inactive and they fell unconscious. Later when a treaty was being signed between Earth and the Tok'ra, Carter and O'Neill were exposed as Za'tarcs, Goa'uld sleeper agents, however this was because of a false reading when testing them, where they neglected to mention their feelings for one another. When SG-1 and Jacob Carter were stranded millions of light years from home, she helped her father repair the ships damaged systems. (SG1: "Upgrades", "Divide and Conquer", "Exodus", "Enemies")

Carter fell unconscious offworld, revealed to have been caused by an ascended being who tried to communicate with her. This ascended being, Orlin took human form because he had fallen in love with her and she kept him hidden from the others. She was later taken hostage by a man who wanted to find out how she had survived her implantation as he had procured a symbiote to be implanted in him to save his life. When Anubis attacked the Earth Stargate, Carter and O'Neill flew the F-302 to try to get to another planet to contact their allies for help, however the ship did not engage its hyperdrive properly and they had to abort. (SG1: "Ascension", "Desperate Measures", "Redemption, Part 1", "Redemption, Part 2")

When contacted by the Asgard for their help in activating a time dilation device to trap the Replicators on Hala, their homeworld, and they found that the Replicators had evolved into human-form, Carter bonded with one of them, Fifth and managed to get him to help them, however she was ordered to betray him. When it was discovered that Anubis had created a new form of soldier, Carter helped in creating a weapon to neutralize them with help from her father. Carter was set up with a friend of her brother, Pete Shanahan and the two began a relationship. (SG1: "Unnatural Selection", "Evolution, Part 1", "Evolution, Part 2", "Death Knell", "Chimera")

When O'Neill was put in stasis, Carter managed to convince Dr. Elizabeth Weir to let her and Teal'c travel to Hala to contact the Asgard for help, however she was captured by Fifth and forced into an illusory world to try to trick Carter into loving him, when she refused, Fifth left and created a Replicator duplicate of her. Carter was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and took control of SG-1 and soon after Pete proposed to her and she accepted. (SG1: "New Order, Part 1", "New Order, Part 2", "Affinity")

Carter convince Colson to keep quiet

Command

Her first command mission was to locate a lab used by Anubis however the lab was abandoned and SG-1 was trapped underground for several days. When Alec Colson, an avionics businessman attempted to expose the Stargate program, Carter tried to get him not to, even taking him offworld to the Alpha Site. Carter then worked with her Replicator duplicate to overcome Fifths resistance to the anti-Replicator weapon, however it was all Replicator Carters plan to figure out how to overcome the effects of the device. When it was discovered that a device on Dakara was able to destroy all the Replicators, Carter worked with her father to modify the device and destroy the Replicators. (SG1: "Zero Hour", "Covenant", "Gemini", "Reckoning, Part 1", "Reckoning, Part 2")

Area 51

Following the collapse of the Goa'uld empire, Carter transfered to Area 51 taking command of the Stargate Research and Development department helping to develop the Mark IX Nuclear weapon as well as helping to advance Prometheus' technology. Carter was asked by Colonel Cameron Mitchell to come back and rejoin SG-1 but she refused stating she had "reasons" for wanting the posting at Area 51. (SG1: "Avalon, Part 1", "Beachhead")

Carter rejoins the SGC

Back to SG-1

When the Goa'uld Nerus contacted Stargate Command concerning the beachhead the Ori were setting up on Kallana, Carter was reassigned back to the SGC to help with deployment of the Mark IX "Gatebuster". When Ba'al, who was living on Earth, contacted the SGC telling them that if they didn't leave him alone then he would detonate a Naquadah bomb somewhere in the US, Carter was tasked with locating the bomb when she discovered that a tower in Seattle was laced with Naquadah and had to be beamed out before it exploded. Carter also officially rejoins SG-1. (SG1: "Beachhead", "Ex Deus Machina")

When the Ori plague broke out on Earth, Carter worked with Dr. Bill Lee to finish the Anti-Prior device so they could get a blood sample from a Prior to help cure the plague. She then helped the de-ascended Orlin work on the cure, however the extended effort resulted in Orlin losing all of his memories, Carter visited him in a institution he was sent to. When an alternate SG-1 arrived at the SGC, Carter worked with her alternate, and then many of her alternate, selves to figure out how they were all being sent to their reality and how to stop it. (SG1: "The Fourth Horseman, Part 1", "The Fourth Horseman, Part 2", "Ripple Effect")

Carter and the rest of SG-1 escorted IOA officials offworld to the Gamma Site when the base was overrun by alien bugs and the only way to be rescued was for them to access the communications outpost, Carter managed to amplify the signal to reach the Odyssey on its way. Working with Dr. Lee again, Carter and Daniel were taken into an alternate plane of existance when activating Merlin's device where they discovered a log of a device Merlin was building that could kill ascended beings. When another Supergate was found to be completed, Carter was beamed ner the gate to change a control crystal and dial out to prevent the Ori from dialing in, but they were too late and Carter became stranded when most of the defending fleet was destroyed by Ori Motherships, she was eventually rescued by the Odyssey. (SG1: "The Scourge", "Arthur's Mantle", "Camelot", "Flesh and Blood")

Carter came up with the idea of jumping a regular sized Stargate to the Supergate to block all incoming wormholes, so SG-1 went to the Pegasus galaxy to implement their plan to use a black hole to power the gate indefinitely. When SG-1 was spending a weekend in O'Neill's cabin with Landry, Carter was left in command of the SGC until Colonel Reynolds returned to take command. When it was discovered that the Free Jaffa Nation were using the Dakara device to kill any Ori followers, Carter helped SG-1 take control of an abandoned Ori ship. She also met with Jeannie Miller to get her to sign a non-disclosure agreement and for her to join them in research. (SG1: "The Pegasus Project", "Uninvited", "Counterstrike", ATL: "McKay and Mrs. Miller")

Carter makes a path through the time dilation field

Investigating a possible new Ori Supergate, the Odyssey discovers an ambush and the ship is taken over by the Lucian Alliance, Carter is forced to repair the ship, however she takes her time and the Lucian Alliance commander Anateo had Colonel Emerson killed. With Carters help they took back the ship. SG-1 eventually found the location of the Sangraal and Carter helped them get through the time dilation field, then she went to work on Morgan Le Fay's planetary circuit and attempted to override its functions so they could dial out. (SG1: "Company of Thieves", "The Quest, Part 1", "The Quest, Part 2")

Carter and SG-1 went offworld to test Merlin's phase shifting device and Carter was shot by an Ori soldier and badly wounded. She managed to instruct Mitchell in activating Merlin's device and hid both of them from the Ori forces and then informed Mitchell how to fix the device and hide the entire village and protect it from attack. Further experimenting with the device, Carter was accidentally pulled into an alternate reality where the Stargate program had been revealed to the world. Carter traveled to the Ori galaxy with SG-1 aboard the Odyssey to locate the Ark of Truth. When the ship was infested with Replicators, created by an IOA officer to stop the Ori fleet, Carter worked to find the code to shut them down, finding it on the same crystal used to make them. (SG1: "Line in the Sand", "The Road Not Taken", Stargate: The Ark of Truth)

Midway

Carter eventually went to the Midway Space Station to finalize the completion of the station. Promoted to a full-bird Colonel she was working on the computer systems on Midway with Dr. Bill Lee when they were contacted by Col. Ellis who was searching for Atlantis which had never made it to the rendezvous point after fleeing Lantea.

Carter and Lee used the stations computers to try to figure out where the city was and came up with a plan to augment the sensors on the Apollo. They traveled to the Pegasus galaxy and went aboard the ship to implement their plan. They eventually found Atlantis and they diverted them to Asuras to rescue Col. Sheppard's team. Afterwards Carter helped the expedition land the city on M35-117. She then returned to Earth to debrief General Landry. (ATL: "Adrift", "Lifeline")

Carter on Atlantis

Atlantis

"We defeated the Replicators; we thwarted Michael's plans; and the Wraith are in a state of disarray. All of this happened while she was leader of Atlantis."
Teyla Emmagan

Carter then was informed that she was to travel to Atlantis and take control of the expedition. Before leaving she met with Teal'c who wished her well and informed her that SG-1 would never be far away. She went to Atlantis and was met by the senior staff before being shown her quarters where she was asked by Ronon Dex if he could bring some of his old Satedan friends but she denied the request. She later takes part in a rescue attempt to find John Sheppard, Teyla Emmagan and Ronon Dex. (ATL: "Reunion")

When the city plays host to an energy entity, Carter likened it to a similar entity that took the form of Col. O'Neill and then came up with the idea to use technology she had previously encountered to go into the mind of Rodney McKay. Months later when the expedition was infected by Kirsan fever and lost their memories, Carter help McKay find Teyla so they could cure everyone. (ATL: "Doppelganger", "Tabula Rasa")

When the expedition met with Davos he showed Carter a vision of the city being attacked and destroyed by the Asurans, later revealed to be a duplicate city. Months later during the Wraith-Asuran War, Carter then took tactical controls of the Daedalus during the Battle of Asuras to give McKays plan to destroy the planet and all the Asurans a chance. (ATL: "The Seer", "Be All My Sins Remember'd")

When Atlantis underwent a complete lockdown quarantine, Carter was trapped in a transporter with Dr. Radek Zelenka for several hours until they were rescued. Some time later she went offworld to M5V-801 with Dr. Jennifer Keller and Dr. McKay to help convince the people to move to a new location after the planet began suffering tremors. The three fell into an underground chamber and had to find a way to get out. Carter was injured in an attempt. (ATL: "Quarantine", "Trio")

After Teyla's location was discovered a rescue team went to retrieve her but were trapped under the debris from the facility. Carter led the rescue mission. She later returned to Earth to attend the removal of Ba'al from his host and for an evaluation but was informed she was being replaced by Richard Woolsey. Carter attended the extraction ceremony and then went for lunch with the rest of SG-1 and General O'Neill. (ATL: "Search and Rescue", Stargate: Continuum)

USS George Hammond

Carter commands the USS George Hammond

While General Landry was heading a task force in Washington D.C. Carter had command of the SGC where she helped co-ordinate the attack on the Wraith Hive ship. She welcomed Col. John Sheppard back to Earth and informed him of the hives position. After the attack on Area 51, Carter told Sheppard that the Control chair had been destroyed. (ATL: "Enemy at the Gate")

Carter soon took command of the newest of the 304's, the USS George Hammond. One of the first missions was to transport some personnel, including Senator Alan Armstrong, to the Icarus Base on PX3-451. Remaining in orbit, the vessel helped defend the planet from attack by three Ha'tak-class Motherships, operated by the Lucian Alliance. When the core of the planet went critical, Carter ordered an evacuation by recalling all the F-302's and beaming all personnel out, leaving 80+ personnel MIA. She then contacted Earth to find out what was happening. (SGU: "Air, Part 1")

When Homeworld Command learned of the Lucian Alliance base to dial Destiny, Carter was deployed to the planet. She ordered the F-302's to descend and for personnel to be beamed into the structure on the planet. When the core of this planet also went critical, Carter recalled the fighters but had to leave before two returned or the planet would have destroyed the ship. (SGU: "Incursion, Part 1")
