Overview

Components

A generator consists of a small sample of Naquadah as its core reactor. The entire unit has a Lead-lined casing to absorb radiation and Trinium shielding, most likely as some sort of buffering device. Reactors also contain a converter to change the reactors energy into usable power, a heating element, most likely for the reaction procedure and a fodinaire, a device of unknown function. (SG1: "Learning Curve")

Function

Naquadah generators work by using small samples of Naquadah to provide a clean, steady stream of enormous energy. A reaction occurs either through exothermic heat or a strong enough electrical current. The reaction would most likely cause intense heat and give off some form of radiation. The converter in the reactor allows for its enormous energy to be harnessed for electrical purposes.

The enormous energy supply is dangerous when not given an outlet or if feed back into the reactor, eventually causing the reactor to go critical and detonate, causing large explosions in excess of 20 kilotons. A buffer is installed on the reactors to ensure that the entirety of its energy is not expelled, most likely overloading other systems and irreparably damaging the reactor itself.

Mark I generators are very simply operated by removing a control piece at the top which houses the Naquadah core, the piece can be turned to activate the reactor to 50 or 100% or completely deactivate. If this piece is taken the reactor is useless. Tau'ri generator technology had an initial, minute problem in that the Trinium shielding in the reactor was diverting current before it reached the core, however this problem was solved by reversing the current polarity. (SG1: "Learning Curve", "Scorched Earth", "48 Hours", ATL: "The Storm", "The Eye")

Variations

Orbanian reactor

The Orbanian reactors were smaller than the Tau'ri versions contained in an intricately designed box. The reactors were somewhat more complex however it is unknown what sort of energy these reactors can supply and if they are more efficient than any others. (SG1: "Learning Curve")

Prototype reactor

The prototype reactor was built shortly after the Tau'ri received help from the Orbanians. The reactor was built quickly and only used a microscopic amount of Naquadah, the initial reaction caused an energy pulse and the first Naquadah generator was born. (SG1: "Learning Curve")

This prototype reactor was used by SG-1 to cause an explosion to stop an alien spaceship that was poised to destroy an entire civilization. The reactor was set to build up energy but not release it, causing an overload and detonation. However the ship was able to transport the generator away before it exploded. (SG1: "Scorched Earth")

The Mark I generator

Mark I

The Mark I generators were much more smaller than the prototype versions but appeared to be easier to handle, control and use. The reactor consisted on two small chambers connected together, the connection housed the reactor core and the control piece. The reactor had two ports, one on each end, to connect to power connections. The generator can be slightly compacted for easier handling. If intentionally overloaded, naqauadah generator will detonate in a 20 kiloton nuclear explosion. (SG1: "Ascension", "The Other Guys", "Death Knell", ATL: "Hot Zone")

Mark II

A second variation of Tau'ri generator was developed and first used to power the Control chair on Atlantis. The Mark II generator provided over 600% the power output of the Mark I essentially operating in a barely controlled overload state. The Mark II depleted its fuel supply very quickly, indicating its exact function was as a one-used power device.

Two of these reactors were kept on Atlantis however their uses were unknown - either as power sources for the city for singular uses such as powering the shields or as a constant source of energy for the city, indicating that the reactors may be capable of providing a wide variety of power levels. (ATL: "The Siege, Part 2", "Critical Mass")

Mini generator

The X-699 uses a small Naquadah generator for its power source. Whether this reactor is as powerful as the larger variations is unknown, but possibilities are that its size determines its power generating capacity. (SG1: "Bounty", Stargate: Continuum)

Alternate timelines

  • In an alternate timeline, Naquadah generator technology had become incredibly advanced reaching as far as an Mark XII. This generator appeared to be able to power Atlantis' shield for almost 800 years without burning through its energy source. (ATL: "The Last Man")
