The Milky Way, known to the Ancients as Avalon, is the name of a spiral galaxy in the Local Group. The Milky Way is home to many influential species such as the Goa'uld, the Replicators and the Tau'ri and home to the Ancients for millions of years, as well as containing the largest Stargate Network in the known universe. History
Ancient domain
Over 50 million years ago, the Alteran people left their home galaxy and journeyed to the Milky Way, naming the galaxy Avalon and building the Stargate Network. They designed and built Destiny and the Stargate Seed ships and sent them out into the universe. Over many millenia they built an alliance with four other prominent races they encountered, the Nox, the Asgard and the Furlings and built a great empire. Eventually a great plague spread across the galaxy and killed off much of the Ancient population and many other species. The Ancients attempted to build a time machine to go back and change their own past to prevent the disaster, however their experiment failed and they gave up. Some repositories of information were created to pass on their knowledge to those who followed them. With the disease gone, they used a device on Dakara to reseed the galaxy with life and then left for the Pegasus galaxy on Atlantis. Goa'uld domain
Several hundred millenia later, many new species had evolved throughout the galaxy, including the Goa'uld who rose to power by stealing and scavenging technology from other races and building an enormous empire which spanned the galaxy. The Goa'uld, Ra came upon Earth and used humans as slaves transplanting them throughout the galaxy. The Goa'uld turned some humans into Jaffa to be used as their army and their empire spread for over 10,000 years before it finally collapsed. (Stargate, SG1: "Moebius, Part 2")
Ori assault
In 2006 the Ori, the reason the Alterans left their home galaxy, and their followers began to invade the galaxy - the Priors came to start converting the masses to Origin, then followed by ships and armies a year later. The free worlds of the Milky Way were slaughtered if they opposed the Ori followers. Eventaully the Ori were defeated although their followers were still adamant about converting the galaxy until an Ancient device, the Ark of Truth was used to show their followers the truth about the Ori.
