Childhood's End |
M7G-677 was a planet in the Pegasus galaxy that was once under the protection of the Lanteans. Sometime during the Lantean-Wraith War, the planet's natives were under the protection of Lantean technology.
History
Around the end of the Lantean-Wraith War 10,000 years ago, a Lantean energy dampening field powered by a Zero Point Module was activated some distance away from the planet's Stargate. The field has the effect of rendering inoperable all electronic devices, including Lantean technology. (ATL: "Childhood's End", "Before I Sleep")
Via the dampening field, the local Human population was protected any potential Wraith attacks, but a control was required in order to protect the locals. In order to prevent the locals from expanding their population outside the protective barrier of the field, a ruthless means population control was enacted: the locals would participate in ritual suicide on the last night of their 24th year.
The strategy was a complete success. The Wraith still visited the planet on occasion, but were never successful in culling the population again. The last known attempt occurred around 500 years ago, when a Dart was disabled by the dampening field and crash-landed. From then on, the Wraith's corpse was displayed in the public area of on the villages as a reminder of the omnipresent threat.
The planet was visited by members of the Atlantis expedition in mid-2004, including mission commander Maj. John Sheppard and scientist Dr. Rodney McKay. Sheppard become personally involved with the social aspects of the suicide pact, while McKay was transfixed by the dampening field's ZPM.
The field was briefly deactivated when McKay 'borrowed' the power source, allowing a Wraith probe to begin scanning the planet. Crisis was averted, however, when the ZPM was replaced and the field restored. McKay was even able to tweak the device to protect a larger area, allowing the locals to end the suicide pact. (ATL: "Childhood's End")
The people of M7G-677 maintained contact with the expedition for some time later. Another team from Atlantis visited in early 2006 to repair the dampening field when it began malfunctioning. (ATL: "Critical Mass")
