The Lanteans, also known as the Atlanteans and the Ancestors, were the evolution of the Ancients during their time on Atlantis and in the Pegasus galaxy as well as those who returned to Earth following the Lantean-Wraith War.
The Lanteans were the highest physical form the Ancients ever achieved, they were humanoid in appearance but many of them had advanced cognitive abilities such as telekinesis and telepathy from advancements in their genetics through either near-ascension or genetic manipulation. The advancements in their brains led them to develop high-intelligence. Each Lantean had the appropriate DNA marker, the Ancient Technology Activation gene, required to activate and control most of their technology. (ATL: "Before I Sleep", "Tao of Rodney", "Rising", "Hide and Seek")
Very little is known about Lantean culture, they were very trusting of others as evident by the number of human civilizations they helped set up and maintain over the Pegasus galaxy and the greeting written in Ancient on the central tower stairs, welcoming others and offering shelter for those who needed it. (ATL: "The Brotherhood", "The Tower", "Rising")
The Lanteans had a simple social structure. The highest level was the Lantean council who ruled on matter for the entire race. The next few levels consisted of ship captains, their crews, scientists, assistants and others. Based on their philosophy of helping those who need it, they would not have had social definitions and classes. (ATL: "Before I Sleep", "Aurora", "The Return, Part 1")
During their time in the Pegasus galaxy the Lanteans developed some of their most advanced technology including Aurora-class battleships, Mini-drones, genetic manipulators, the Attero device, subspace containment vessels, defensive satellites, the Mobile Drilling Platform, personal shields, Time travel technology and many more advanced technologies, many of which still reside in the Pegasus galaxy. (ATL: "Aurora", "Harmony", "Tao of Rodney", "The Lost Tribe", "Submersion", "Hide and Seek", "Before I Sleep")
Journey to Pegasus
Following the plague that wiped out most life in the Milky Way, the Ancients reseeded the galaxy with life then packed up their entire civilization and left the galaxy on Atlantis. (SG1: "Reckoning, Part 2", ATL: "Rising")
- "... in the hope of spreading new life in a galaxy where there appeared to be none. Soon the new life grew, prospered...In time, a thousand worlds bore the fruit of life in this form."
- — Melia
The Ancients made a new home in the Pegasus galaxy and began to spread to multiple worlds, seeding human life and foster relationships with these people. They also built a new Stargate Network in this galaxy and planted them on numerous worlds. They built new outposts, city ships, warships and technology. They inadvertently seeded humans on a planet with the Iratus bug which led to the future birth of the Wraith. They came upon this world some time later and found the Wraith sleeping, when they awoke, they made enemies of the Lanteans. (ATL: "Rising", "The Tower", "Aurora", "The Gift")
- "The Lanteans were powerful but careless."
- — Todd
For over a hundred years they fought the Wraith; every battle was won by the Lanteans and overconfident in their technology they followed Wraith ships in their territory until they were overcome and taken over. The Wraith took the Zero Point Modules that powered these ships and began to clone more soldiers. Eventually all the Lantean worlds fell to the Wraith until only Atlantis remained. (ATL: "Spoils of War", "The Siege, Part 2")
- "For several more years the Lanteans were able to hold off their attackers, relying on the city's shield and superior weaponry, including the weapons satellite system. No matter how many Wraith ships they destroyed, more kept coming. They could win almost every battle but they saw no way to win the war, so they submerged the city and left."
- — John Sheppard
Sinking their city to protect it from the Wraith and besieged for many years, losing all ships that tried to get through, they saw no way to win the war so they left through the Stargate back to Earth. (ATL: "Before I Sleep")
