Biography
Early life
O'Neill was born on October 20th, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. According to his clone he never embraced high school and has indicated that his life at this point was fairly low and he may have turned to drugs. When O'Neill was at least 19 he joined the United States Air Force graduating with honors from the Colorado Springs Air Force Academy in 1974 at the rank of Second Lieutenant. [3] (SG1: "Children of the Gods", "Need", "The Devil You Know", "Fragile Balance")
Military
O'Neill underwent some Special Forces training such as mind control resistance. Sometime in the 1980's O'Neill was on an "Unofficial" mission parachuting over the borders of Iran and Iraq when his parachute opened a little late and he hit the ground fracturing his skull. Due to the mission secret nature no rescue mission was performed and O'Neill had to make his own way out which took him nine days. The thing which got him through this was the thought of returning to his wife Sara. In 1982, during the Cold War, he served with Charles Kawalsky in an operation in East Germany to find a Russian agent. The mission was a failure and the team leader Colonel John Michaels was killed and the team retreated. (SG1: "Solitudes", "The Gamekeeper")
O'Neill also served with Frank Cromwell on an operation in Iraq. When their mission was uncovered and the team attacked, O'Neill was injured and Cromwell believed that he had died and got the rest of the team out. O'Neill then spent four months in an Iraqi prison, strengthening his belief that no member of his team should ever be left behind. During the Gulf war O'Neill served in Special Ops. He worked with Lieutenant Harlan Beck in Operation Proven Force, out of Incirlik, Turkey. He also served with Burke on an operation with a third member, Woods. Woods was killed by Burke who claimed it was under friendly fire and as O'Neill hadn't seen what happened, he did not stand up for Burke and he was reassigned. (SG1: "A Matter of Time", "Evolution, Part 2")
Charlie
O'Neill had a son, Charlie with Sara. O'Neill used to play catch with Charlie and despite his military backgorund refused to let Charlie play with toy guns. One of Charlie's friends gave him a green water pistol and O'Neill was upset at this, becoming mad at Charlie. Two weeks later Charlie accidently shot himself while playing with O'Neill's real gun in their home in Winter Park, Colorado. O'Neill and Sara raced him to an emergency room where he later died from his injuries. This caused a rift between him and Sara, O'Neill blamed himself for Charlie's death and refused to open up to Sara. The two became estranged and O'Neill eventually left the military. (SG1: "Cold Lazarus", "Jolinar's Memories")
Abydos
In 1996, O'Neill was chosen to take command of the mission through the Stargate to Abydos, specifically for his unstable personality. Still distraught over the death of Charlie, O'Neill accepted the mission. He met with General W. O. West and after seeing the fossilized remains of two Jackal Guards, knew the mission may be suicidal. His orders were to go through the Stargate and detect any possible threat to Earth and if found was to detonate a Nuclear weapon and destroy the Stargate on Abydos. With help from Dr. Daniel Jackson and the Abydonians O'Neill helped to defend the planet from Ra by using a Ring Transporter to send the nuclear weapon up to Ra's ship. O'Neill returned home to live out his retirement. (Stargate)
SG-1
After the Stargate sprung back to life and aliens had kidnapped a female soldier, O'Neill was visited by Major Samuels who brought him back to Cheyenne Mountain where he met with General Hammond. Hammond informed him of their plan to send a Nuclear weapon back through the Stargate to Abydos to stop these aliens who he figured had uncovered the Stargate on their end. Telling the truth that Abydos was not destroyed and that Daniel Jackson was still alive, the General allowed him to take a team to the planet to learn where these aliens came from. On Abydos the Abydonians were attacked by these mysterious aliens and Jackson's wife Sha're and her brother Skaara were taken. O'Neill brought Jackson back to Earth to help find them where O'Neill told him that his wife had already left him when he got back from Abydos the first time. O'Neill led the team to this new planet, Chulak where he and the other two members of SG-1 - Jackson and Samantha Carter - were captured.
Inside a prison cell they found out that these aliens, the Goa'uld, were the same race as Ra and Skaara and Sha're had been chosen to be hosts for these aliens. The leader, Apophis, ordered that the rest of the prisoners be killed. O'Neill had noted one of the guards had been covertly appalled by the treatment of the prisoners and when the aliens were about to kill them O'Neill asked him to help them. This guard, Teal'c believed O'Neill and turned his weapon on the other guards helping the prisoners escape. O'Neill and the others ran back to the gate to try to stop Sha're and Skaara leaving, but they were too late. Making it back to Earth, O'Neill suggested that Teal'c be allowed to join SG-1. (SG1: "Children of the Gods")
O'Neill was soon faced with the fact that an old friend of his Charles Kawalsky had been infected with a Goa'uld. A medical team tried to remove it but the symbiote deceived them and eventually took complete control. The Goa'uld tried leaving through the Stargate but was stopped by Teal'c, O'Neill had them shut down the gate right as the back of Kawalsky's head was in the event horizon, destroying part of his head and brain and killing the symbiote. (SG1: "The Enemy Within")
While on P3X-562, O'Neill was injured by a crystal entity and the entity tried to heal him, but was prevented from completely doing so because of the emotional trauma O'Neill suffered when his son, Charlie died. The entity assumed the form of O'Neill and traveled back to Earth to find Charlie to help heal O'Neill, not knowing that Charlie's death meant he could no longer be around. The real O'Neill finally coming to consciousness, came back to Earth and was held in containment to determine who he was eventually finding out that he was the real O'Neill. SG-1 managed to find this entity and it transformed into Charlie to help give O'Neill some closure before being taken back to its planet. (SG1: "Cold Lazarus")
On Argos O'Neill was drugged by a woman, Kynthia who was interested in him and they had sex. He became infected with Nanites, whom all the planets inhabitants had, that started to age him very quickly giving him only weeks to live. He figured out that something in the village controlled the nanites and found the transmitter, calling back to Earth so they could come and fix it. He eventually reverted back to his "old" self. (SG1: "Brief Candle")
O'Neill became enamored with a Goa'uld queen Hathor, after being exposed to a powerful drug, Nish'ta. Hathor claimed to want to help the Tau'ri but her plan was to use the humans to create a new army. Acquiring a genetic "sample" from Daniel, she spawned a new breed of symbiotes and then used a device to turn O'Neill in a Jaffa, placing him in the symbiote tank so a new symbiote would find its way to him. He was taken out of the tank by Carter, Teal'c and Dr. Fraiser and healed in the Sarcophagus. (SG1: "Hathor")
While fleeing a planet the Stargate received an energy boost from weapons fire and the wormhole forked sending O'Neill and Carter to a second, undiscovered Stargate in Antarctica. O'Neill broke his leg and fractured some ribs upon exiting the gate due to the increased velocities. They were eventually rescued. O'Neill and the rest of SG-1 formulated a plan to stop a Goa'uld invasion by defying orders and going through the Stargate to an address discovered in an Alternate reality by Daniel Jackson. They found themselves on a ship and that the ship was being commanded by Klorel, Apophis' son and the Goa'uld which had Skaara as a host. They attempted to capture Skaara/Klorel but O'Neill was forced to shoot him. (SG1: "Solitudes", "Within the Serpent's Grasp")
When forcibly entered in a Virtual reality O'Neill had to re-live a traumatic experience, the 1982 mission to East Germany, where his commanding officer was killed. He was given the chance to do it over again, however every attempt ended the same and he refused to do it anymore. While investigating an alien orb the device sprung extensions outward and impaled O'Neill forcing him against a wall and infecting him with the virus it contained. When the device was attacked with a Staff weapon O'Neill received some of the energy hurting him. In the end they had to give the device enough energy so they could communicate with it, killing O'Neill in the process. Given the opportunity to go a new planet and live out, the virus left O'Neill. (SG1: "The Gamekeeper", "Message in a Bottle")
While receiving a medal for destroying the Goa'uld ships over Earth, O'Neill was approached by a reporter, Armin Selig who claimed to have knowledge of the Stargate. O'Neill was ordered to find out what the reporter knew but he was run over by a car and killed, blaming O'Neil' for it before dying. When the SGC dialed into a planet being destroyed by a Black hole O'Neill helped to implement the plan to save Earth by nearly sacrificing himself getting an explosive device close enough to the Stargate. (SG1: "Secrets", "A Matter of Time")
Traveling to P3R-272 O'Neill looked into an Ancient Repository of Information and had the entire knowledge of the Ancients downloaded into his brain. First he started replacing common words with Ancient ones and then started doing strange things such as building devices, programming the SGC dialing computer with new addresses and inventing a new math for predicting the location of planets. He left Earth and traveled to the Ida galaxy where the Asgard removed the knowledge from his mind. (SG1: "The Fifth Race")
O'Neill awoke from stasis, apparently on Earth in the year 2077. he was told that he was found in stasis and the rest of SG-1 were found dead. Attempting to find out who had the technology to do so, they used a memory device. O'Neill soon discovered that both Carter and Daniel were alive and they too had been used to get information by Hathor. O'Neill was implanted with one of Hathor's new symbiotes but a Tok'ra spy in her ranks managed to immerse him in the stasis chamber and kill the symbiote. O'Neill then helped Carter find the bases shield generator and destroy it to let the rescue team get out. (SG1: "Out of Mind", "Into the Fire")
O'Neill was chosen by the Asgard to serve as Earth's counterpart in negotiations with the Goa'uld to have Earth included in the Protected Planets Treaty. Upon discovering that the Orbanian Urrone children underwent a process which removed all of their memories and knowledge, O'Neill, without permission, took one of the children, Merrin off the base and showed her how to be a kid, knowledge which she shared with others on her planet. (SG1: "Fair Game", "Learning Curve")
While on a mission to rescue Jacob Carter from Sokar's prison moon, Netu O'Neill was drugged in an attempt to extract information from him, these drugs, coupled with a Memory recall device, led O'Neill to relive one of the last memories he had with his son, Charlie. O'Neill, after coming back from a mission, was drugged and an alien with duplicating technology took his place, when the alien was killed, O'Neill awoke in a storage room plugged into an alien device with many others. He escaped and helped to rid the base of these aliens. (SG1: "Jolinar's Memories", "The Devil You Know", "Foothold")
While helping evacuate some people from a planet passing through a asteroid field, O'Neill was trapped offworld when a large meteor crashed into the Stargate and buried it. O'Neill and the other survivors on the planet assumed that the Stargate was destroyed so O'Neill settled in and started a relationship with a woman called Laira. Meanwhile the rest of SG-1 had devised a plan to tunnel into the debris around the buried Stargate and rescue him. Later O'Neill was asked by General Hammond, the Asgard, the Nox and the Tollan to go undercover in an offworld N.I.D base that was stealing offworld technology and managed to help bring them down. (SG1: "A Hundred Days", "Shades of Grey")
When Thor's ship was infested with Replicators who took the ship to Earth where Thor managed to get O'Neill on board to help him. O'Neill and the rest of SG-1 managed to destroy the ships deceleration drive and the ship burned up on re-entry. The gated off the ship and later back to Earth. When offworld, helping a race defend themselves, O'Neill found out that the entire race was genocidal and started the war. When SG-1 were given the chance to wear advanced armbands which increased strength, speed and stamina, O'Neill was the first and he, Carter and Daniel went offworld to destroy Apophis' new ship. (SG1: "Nemesis", "Small Victories", "The Other Side", "Upgrades")
When a treaty was signed between the Tok'ra and Earth, all personnel had to be scanned to detect if they were a Za'tarc, O'Neill and Carter were identified as Za'tarcs however this was an error due to them not noting their feelings to one another during an interview which gave false results. When offworld, O'Neill and Teal'c were caught in a beam which allowed them to remember events as a time loop started occurring and with their knowledge they were able to stop the loop. On another planet SG-1 had their memories wiped and forced to work in underground power facilities. O'Neill and the others began to remember and when they realized something was wrong, they managed to free the other workers. O'Neill and Teal'c were testing the X-301 aircraft, they were sent across the solar system and were rescued by Jacob Carter and the rest of SG-1. (SG1: "Divide and Conquer", "Window of Opportunity", "Beneath the Surface", "Tangent")
When a meeting was occurring between Apophis and Heru'ur, O'Neill had to pilot the Tel'tak they were using while Jacob, Daniel and Carter were reprogramming a space mine to attack Apophis' ship. When Hammond retired, O'Neill was annoyed at the new commanding officer and when he found out that Hammond had been forced into retirement, O'Neill, with the help of Harold Maybourne, tracked down the people in charge and managed to get Hammond re-instated. While checking up on an offworld research base, O'Neill and the others were attacked by energy beings and the only way to save everyone was to activate the Stargate which would drive the energy beings away. O'Neill went to activate the Stargate but was attacked when he got there, luckily Teal'c had followed him and rescued him. (SG1: "The Serpent's Venom", "Chain Reaction", "Prodigy")
The android Harlan arrived at the SGC and informed them that their android doubles had gone offworld and not come back the real SG-1 went after them. O'Neill fought with his duplicate because he had broken his promise to sty on their world. With the duplicate O'Neill's help they managed to overthrow the Jaffa force that had taken the world they were on. When on another planet, SG-1 was affected by a chemical which made them believe that they had a fifth member. Carter, Teal'c and Daniel went back to the SGC while O'Neill was trapped offworld with this fifth member, Lt. Tyler. He eventually showed O'Neill who he really was and O'Neill aagreed to help him evade the Jaffa and get him back to his homeworld. (SG1: "Double Jeopardy", "The Fifth Man")
When it was discovered that Martin Lloyd had sold the idea of Stargate Command as a TV show, O'Neill went undercover as the shows military expert. During a training exercise with new SGC recruits, O'Neill was part of their "foothold situation" scenario at the SGC. When Earth came under attack from Anubis' new weapon, a Stargate Destroyer, O'Neill and Carter piloted the X-302, however the ship automatically disengaged the hyperdrive. Later O'Neill piloted the ship with the active Stargate attached to it, which entered hyperspace and detonated away from Earth, O'Neill managed to eject from the ship in time. (SG1: "Wormhole X-Treme!", "Proving Ground", "Redemption, Part 2")
Tok'ra
After travelling to a research station in Antarctica where they uncovered a frozen Ancient, O'Neill contracted the Ancient Plague, O'Neill was left with only one choice to live - blend with a Tok'ra. A true blending never took place and the mixing of them caused the Tok'ra Kanan to take to heart O'Neill's belief in that no one should be left behind. He left the Tok'ra base he was on and returned to Ba'al's Secret outpost where he left behind a human slave who had helped him gain access to Ba'al's quarters.
During the rescue attempt, O'Neill was injured and Kanan abandoned him to the Jaffa, Ba'al tortured him for information on the Tok'ra, killing O'Neill and reviving him in a Sarcophagus many times. Daniel Jackson came to O'Neill and offered him a chance to help him ascend to save his life, however O'Neill refused to give up, wanting instead for Daniel to use his powers to help him escape. He was eventually given a chance to escape when Yu attacked the base. (SG1: "Frozen", "Abyss")
Back at the SGC
When the Prometheus was hijacked by rogue NID agents, O'Neill and Teal'c took a Death glider and got aboard the ship before it went into hyperspace and managed to take the ship back. When SG-1 found a device offworld that allowed others to see creatures on other planes of existence, O'Neill tried to track down a person who had escaped the quarantine set up to contain the effects of the device. A rogue agency, The Committee used a Mimic device to impersonate O'Neill and frame him for the murder of Senator Robert Kinsey. When Maybourne came to O'Neill and told him about an offworld cache of weapons, Maybourne tricked them and tried to escape through a portal. When O'Neill tried to stop him he was also taken through this portal and found themselves on a nearby moon for almost a month. Luckily SG-1 managed to figure out where he was sent and rescue him. (SG1: "Prometheus", "Sight Unseen", "Smoke and Mirrors", "Paradise Lost")
O'Neill was visited by Daniel Jackson again and told that Anubis was looking for a powerful device, the Eye of Ra, on Abydos, so SG-1 went to find the device before he did. They found the device but were cut off from the gate by Anubis Jaffa. Daniel got Anubis to agree to let SG-1 go in return for the eye, so that they could find a cache of Ancient weapons to defeat Anubis. However they had to disable Anubis weapon so O'Neill and Carter used the F-302 to destroy Anubis' power source. Later, a rogue Asgard Loki, kidnapped O'Neill and cloned him, leaving his clone on Earth while he studied the real O'Neill, luckily the clone did not mature enough and appeared as a teenager, so SG-1 managed to track Loki down and stop him. (SG1: "Full Circle", "Fallen", "Fragile Balance")
When Daniel Jackson and Dr. Bill Lee were captured in Honduras searching for an Ancient device, O'Neill went after them. When the Alpha Site was attacked by Anubis Kull warriors, O'Neill went to look for Carter who was missing. When another SG team were trapped offworld by Jaffa, O'Neill went with others to help and was injured. When Anubis was rallying his forces to attack Earth, SG-1 went to take information from an Ancient repository, but were attacked by Anubis forces, so O'Neill once again let the repository download the information into his brain. With this new knowledge O'Neill located a weapons platform under Antarctica and used it to destroy Anubis fleet. He then went into stasis to keep him alive. Later Thor beamed him out and removed the knowledge, but not before O'Neill used the Ancient knowledge to build an anti-Replicator weapon and help the Asgard drive the Replicators from their planet. (SG1: "Evolution, Part 2", "Death Knell", "Heroes, Part 2", "Lost City, Part 1", "Lost City, Part 2", "New Order, Part 1", "New Order, Part 2")
Promotion
O'Neill was promoted to Brigadier General and placed in command of the SGC. When it was discovered that Anubis was found to have been on Earth in energy form and taking over members of the base to get through the Stargate, O'Neill put the base into lockdown to force Anubis to use his ascended powers and thus be taken care of by the other ascended beings. When SG-1 was believed to be captured by Ba'al, O'Neill refused to hand Camulus over to Ba'al in exchange for them. (SG1: "Lockdown", "Zero Hour")
O'Neill allowed the female Jaffa of Hak'tyl to come to the SGC after their planet was compromised so they could find a new world to settle on. When the Tok'ra told them that the System Lord Ares was returning to one of this previous planets, the planet where Maybourne had retired to, SG-1 went to get him to come back, however he had become their king and refused to leave, because an Ancient prophecy noted that they would destroy the Goa'uld. They found an Ancient time device and O'Neill came to pilot the ship, using its weapons to destroy Ares, ship. O'Neill returned home to find that someone had broken into his house, a barber from Indiana, Joe Spencer who had been seeing portions of O'Neill's life through use of the Ancient Long-range communication stones which O'Neill had previously touched another copy of which created the link between them. (SG1: "Sacrifices", "It's Good to Be King", "Citizen Joe")
Homeworld Command
O'Neill was promoted to Lieutenant General and took command of Homeworld Command. He visited Daniel after he returned from the Ori galaxy and then took Colonel Cameron Mitchell up in and F-302 and reassured him that he was the right man for the job of leading SG-1. When SG-1 was helping Martin Lloyd to write his movie script, O'Neill showed up, which was a cover for him going offworld to help with Mitchell's celebration concerning his 200th trip through the Stargate. When Daniel was discovered to be a Prior, O'Neill was taken by Daniel on board the Odyssey so he could order the Daedalus to disconnect the Stargate in the Pegasus galaxy and free up the Supergate so he could send the Sangraal through and defeat the Ori. (SG1: "Origin", "200", "The Shroud")
When the Tria was found and the Ancients returned to Atlantis, O'Neill went to try to get the Ancients to agree to help them, however the city was attacked by the Asurans and O'Neill and Richard Woolsey were the only survivors. They helped Major John Sheppard's team to retake the city, O'Neill swam underwater to activate the Secondary Puddle Jumper bays controls and void the water in the chamber, allowing the team to exit the bay and retake the city, however O'Neill and Woolsey were captured by the Asurans. Later O'Neill attended the Extraction ceremony of the last of the Ba'al clones then offered to buy lunch for the team. (ATL: "The Return, Part 1", "The Return, Part 2") (Stargate: Continuum)When the Destiny expedition arrived on Destiny, Dr. Nicholas Rush contacted Earth and informed O'Neill of the situation. Young later went to talk to him, O'Neill told him to fix the ship and get the supplies they need to surivive. After a failed attempt to dial Earth from Destiny, O'Neill still allowed those on board to use the stones, despite the fact that the IOA was not convinced that the plan had failed the way that Rush told them it did. Colonel Everett Young told O'Neill that Rush was trying to find out if Telford was a Lucian Alliance spy and O'Neill had Daniel tailing Rush. Later Young brought O'Neill on board Destiny to help interrogate Telford, O'Neill allowed Young to vent the atmosphere from Telfords room, which was actually done to break the brainwashing. (SGU: "Air, Part 1", "Air, Part 2", "Air, Part 3", "Earth", "Subversion", "Incursion, Part 1")
Personality
Morality and Wisdom
O'Neill has often displayed a high moral code and a willingness to not leave anyone behind, even someone who isn't from Earth. He has also shown distaste at other cultures who had displayed a lack of morality and consciousness such as the Orbanians who took all memories from the Urrone children to give to others. He also is willing to risk his own life for complete strangers in helping them resist the Goa'uld or saving them from natural disasters such as the Edorans and the People of Juna. (SG1: "The Fifth Man", "Learning Curve", "A Hundred Days", "Double Jeopardy")
Abilities and Skills
Despite acting like he is not as smart as he is, O'Neill is quite intelligent having some detailed knowledge of Astronomy and several other topics. O'Neill is quite skilled in the use of many types of weapons such as 9mm's, P-90's and a variety of other Earth and alien weapons such as the Staff weapons, Zat'nik'tel's and Transphase Eradication Rods. O'Neill is also adapt at flying various types of Earth air and space craft such as X-301's, F-302's and BC-303's as well as some control of 304 ships.
