- "...it works by thought control right?
Yeah, that's one way to put it. More like thought-control amplified with emotion."
- — Daniel Jackson and Samantha Carter
The hand device has several functions - firstly the device is capable of projecting a wave of some form of energy which can throw back objects and people, directing energy into a victim in order to incapacitate, torture or kill them, serving as a remote activator for either the ring transporters or the Asgard transporters and creating a shield around the user (although this shield's deflection capability is directly proportional to how much kinetic energy is directed at it). (SG1: "Children of the Gods", "Thor's Chariot", "Secrets", "The Serpent's Venom", "The Nox", "Reckoning, Part 2")
The device functions using a modified version of the power source used in the staff weapon which is channeled through amplification crystals. The user controls some functions of the device with thought-control amplified with emotions, however the user requires traces of Naquadah to be present within their blood. The neural activation of the device may be capable of sending thoughts and memories directly into the victims mind. There also appears to be two different types - a silver colored device used by underlords and gold colored devices used by system lords. (SG1: "Forever in a Day", "Secrets", "The Serpent's Venom")
- "I will not accept failure!"
- — Ra
While on Abydos Ra used a hand device to kill one of his soldiers for failing to locate those Abydonians who had executed the escape of his prisoners. Apophis later used one such device to incapacitate several victims for easier transport back through the Stargate for use as hosts. He later gained an upgraded version of the device which included a shield, a relatively new feature among the devices. The Goa'uld Hathor attempted to kill Colonel Jack O'Neill instead causing the energy from the device to overload a sarcophagus. (Stargate, SG1: "Children of the Gods", "The Nox", "Hathor")
The System Lord Heru'ur used one of these devices to torture Olaf when he invaded Cimmeria. When SG-1 were tracking down the rogue Goa'uld Seth on Earth, Samantha Carter killed Seth by using the device on him when he was on the ground, shattering his spine. The Tok'ra have also been known to use these devices on occassion, the undercover operative Korra had one of these devices when he escaped from capture. (SG1: "Thor's Chariot", "Seth", "Deadman Switch")
The Goa'uld Osiris had a hand device stored in his temple on Earth however it could only be accessed using the Amulet Key. Teal'c was tortured by Terok using one of these devices in an attempt to get him to declare his allegiance back the Goa'uld. Ba'al used one of these devices which had remote access for the Asgard beam transporter so he could escape when he was caught by the Free Jaffa Nation and before they could execute him. (SG1: "The Curse", "The Serpent's Venom", "Reckoning, Part 2")
