Overview
Personnel
The Atlantis expedition is made up of various scientists and military personnel from many different nations, those that part of the Gate Alliance Treaty.
- Main article: Atlantis expedition personnel
- Main article: Atlantis team
There are at least 11 active teams working from Atlantis. These teams are responsible for offworld exploration and research as well as humanitarian aid to worlds that have previously been culled by the Wraith or those suffering from disease. The Atlantis expedition also teaches these worlds new techniques to better improve their lives. (ATL: "Duet", "Coup D'etat", "Tracker")
- Main article: Uniform
The uniforms are charcoal black and have segments which are color coded depending on the role of each individual person. Each person has a flag patch of their home country. The colored segments indicate the persons speciality:
- Red is for those in command position
- Blue are for scientists
- Yellow is for medical personnel
- Black is for military personnel
- Green is for the technical staff
In 2007 the uniforms were replaced with a black variant with similar colors. Rodney McKay mentioned that these new ones are more comfortable as they don't bunch up under the arms. (ATL: "This Mortal Coil")
Commanders
- Dr. Elizabeth Weir - 2004-2007
- Colonel Samantha Carter - 2007-2008
- Richard Woolsey - 2008-present
Departments
Being a primary research outpost, Atlantis personnel are divided into various departments. Rodney McKay is the head of the Science and Research Division. John Sheppard, Radek Zelenka and Jennifer Keller are also heads of other departments, as was Carson Beckett and Bates. Department heads perform year-end employee reviews and performance evaluations on each member in their department, this helps to give people promotions and raises. The known departments are:
- AnthropologyThe botany lab
- Biology
- Microbiology
- Astrobiology
- Botany
- Medicine
- Oceanography
- Physics
- Astrophysics
- Security
City Life
- "Well, I'm sure…the gang at orientation will help you settle in."
- — Richard Woolsey
To better facilitate the change, the Atlantis expedition has set up numerous social activities to help the personnel adjust to the changes. There is even an Orientation Committee to organise events. Activities such as:
- Movie screenings
- Organised sports and activities
- VolleyballAtlantis Chess tournaments
- Golf
- Mini-Golf
- Kickboxing
- Volleyball
- Chess and Yahtzee tournaments
- Poker nights
- Unofficial Mensa chapter
It is also implied that there is a bar on Atlantis where personnel can purchase alcoholic beverages such as Beer. (ATL: "Quarantine", "Trio")
Alien encounters
- "You have been good friends—to all the people of this galaxy."
- — Teyla Emmagan
The expedition has met with many alien races across the galaxy. Most of these are human populations, many of which had received humanitarian and good-well relief from Atlantis as well as protection from and warnings of Wraith attacks. The expedition was somewhat responsible for waking the Wraith centuries before they were supposed to as well as reactivating the Asuran attack directive both which inadvertently led to the deaths of an estimates two million people, a crime for which they were placed on trial for. (ATL: "Rising", "Underground", "Home", "Travelers", "First Contact", "Remnants", "Inquisition")
History
Arrival
The expedition left through the Stargate on Earth and arrived on Atlantis, the expedition at the time having less than 100 members and limited supplies. The expedition found Atlantis untouched but under several hundred feet of ocean and slowly losing power, letting the ocean into the city. A team was assembled to go offworld to locate either another power source or a safe haven to fall back to. The expedition team was attacked and captured by the Wraith and a rescue team was sent after them, inadvertantly awakening the entire Wraith population. (ATL: "Rising")
The expedition started to explore the city, finding new and advanced technologies. An energy creature was accidentally released and started to feed off the energy supplies to the city, this creature was tricked into going through the Stargate. Several offworld teams started to run into the Wraith on many of the planets they visited which led the expediton to believe that one of the Athosians was sending information to the Wraith, which later turned out to be accidental due to a Wraith tracking device, which in turn allowed the expedition to capture a Wraith. (ATL: "Hide and Seek", "Thirty-Eight Minutes", "Suspicion")
The expedition met with the Hoffans who were developing a drug that would make them immune to the Wraith feeding process. Dr. Carson Beckett helped to perfect it but it turned out to have a side effect of killing half those inoculated and of shortly after killing the Wraith who fed on the inoculated, which led the expedition withdrawing form the efforts due to the actions the Wraith would take when they found out. The expedition found a world that could lead them home but it turned out that doing so would sacrifice numerous sentient lifeforms. (ATL: "Poisoning the Well", "Home")
A massive powerful storm was detected approaching the city, one that would most likely cause major flooding and destroy the city. A plan was formulated to use the storms electrical energy to power the shield and protect the city, the expedition members went offworld to Manaria while a small team enacted the plan. The Genii took this opportunity to infiltrate the city and take the supplies they wanted. When they found out the plan they attempted to enact it so the city could be entirely taken as theirs, but they were tricked into believing it wouldn't so they left. (ATL: "The Storm", "The Eye")
While exploring some areas of the city damaged in the storm, a team was infected with a nanite virus and died, the virus spread to others and one member left the quarantine area and the entire city went into lockdown mode. The virus was eventually eradicated with an electromagnetic pulse. While exploring an area of the city, a team came across someone in stasis, later revealed to be an Elizabeth Weir from an alternate timeline who was responsible for the safety protocol on Atlantis allowing it to rise to the surface when the shields failed. (ATL: "Hot Zone", "Before I Sleep")
When it was discovered that the Wraith were on their way to Atlantis, McKay came up with an idea of tying together all their power supply to send a transmission burst to Earth. This allowed the expedition members to record personal videos for their friends and family back home, however these videos were not seen by these people. Later it was revealed that Teyla had some Wraith DNA and was able to telepathically connect to the Wraith coming to Atlantis, discovering that they wanted to location of Earth. (ATL: "Letters from Pegasus", "McKay and Mrs. Miller", "The Gift")
The Siege
When the Wraith were drawing closer to Atlantis, a team was sent to a defense satellite still in the system from the war 10,000 years ago, to repair it. The plan worked and the weapon destoyed one of the hives, but it was destroyed by the other two before it fired again. The expedition were about to abandoned the city and set the self-destruct when a team from Earth gated in with soldiers, weapons and information on how the Daedalus was on its way to Atlantis and they only needed to hold the Wraith off for three days. Many of the soldiers were killed during the attacks and many Wraith beamed into the city.
Sheppard flew a Puddle Jumper with a Genii nuclear weapon into one of the hives and destroyed it. Luckily he was beamed out of the Jumper by the Daedalus which had just arrived. The Daedalus defeated the other hive and the cruisers left. When it was discovered that more hive ships were on their way, a planw as formulated to detonate a nuclear weapon over the city and then cloak it to trick the Wraith into believing that it was destroyed. The plan worked and the Wraith left. (ATL: "The Siege, Part 1", "The Siege, Part 2", "The Siege, Part 3")
Back to work
When McKay and Lt. Laura Cadman were merged into McKay's body, the expedition got some first hand looks at a Wraith Dart as they attempted to separate the two. When one of the Ancient's experiments, Project Arcturus, was discovered a team attempted to repair it to utilize its power generating abilities, however it was too dangerous and ended up being destroyed. When Sheppard was infected with the Wraith retrovirus he escaped confinement and into the city, teams were assembled to track him down. (ATL: "Duet", "Trinity", "Conversion")
A Goa'uld spy infiltrated Atlantis and removed the safeguards on the power systems so the next time they dialed Earth the ZPM would explode. The sabotage was found and the city was saved. When McKay was trapped in a sinking Jumper, many members from several departments on the expedition went to work to find a way to rescue him. When Sheppard and Weir were overtaken by two entities, they escaped and set in motion actions which threatened the lives of the entire expedition. A Wraith who was converted into a human, Michael Kenmore, became part of the expedition until he learned what he used to be and returned. (ATL: "Critical Mass", "Grace Under Pressure", "The Long Goodbye", "Michael")
The expedition helped evacuate a group of people, the Taranaians from their planet which was being destroyed by a supervolcano. The expedition went into an alliance with a hive ship to disseminate the Iratus bug retrovirus and convert other Wraith into humans, the alliance was a loy in order to gain information on hyperdrive specs and the location of Earth, luckily the hives were destroyed. Colonel Sheppard's team met a man Lucius Lavin, who used a unique herb to get the expedition to practically fall in love with him and do anything he asked of them. (ATL: "Inferno", "Allies", "Irresistible")
A new enemy
The expedition made contact with the Asurans, a race of Replicators, who at first seemed like a race of Ancients, until they detained the team and retrieved some information. They intended to destroy Atlantis but they were stopped by the expedition team. Dr. Weir became infected with nanites and the expedition raced to save her life, managing to deactivate the nanites. When experimenting with a new power source another McKay from another reality came to Atlantis informing them that their experiment was destroying his universe. (ATL: "Progeny", "The Real World", "McKay and Mrs. Miller")
The expedition was forced to leave Atlantis and return to Earth when a group of Lanteans were discovered alive on one of their ships, the Tria, and returned them to the city and asked the expedition to leave so they could reclaim their civilization. The city was taken over by the Asurans who killed all the Lanteans. An expedition team assembled to retake the city without authorization, managing to destroy all the Asurans. The Asurans had three ZPM's on Atlantis, two which were sent back to Earth. Many expedition members also began experiencing severe headaches due to the Flagisallus converging on Atlantis. (ATL: "The Return, Part 1", "The Return, Part 2", "Echoes")
While exploring a damaged area of the city, McKay was affected by an Ancient device which increased his mental capabilities and allowed him to create some impressive technologies. Several expedition members were killed when a piece of Ancient technology creating explosive tumors caused damage to the city. The expedition formulated a plan to take Atlantis off of Lantea when an Asuran Stargate satellite weapon attacked the city. Unfortunately the cities hyperdrive cut out on the journey to their new home which led a team to be assembled to travel to the Asuran homeworld and take a ZPM to power the city. (ATL: "Tao of Rodney", "Sunday", "First Strike", "Adrift", "Lifeline")
A new world
Samantha Carter took command of the expedition and shortly after the city became infected with a energy entity and killed Dr. Heightmeyer and attempted to kill other members. M35-117 had several problems as Atlantis' new home. A disease on the planets mainland infected the expedition causing memory loss among almost all of the expedition. The disease was cured by Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan and McKay. This planets star also caused a malfunction in the cities sensors and caused a quarantine lockdown, trapping expedition members across the city. (ATL: "Doppelganger", "Tabula Rasa", "Quarantine")
When it was discovered that the Hoffan drug was being disseminated across the galaxy, the expedition offered humanitarian and medical assistance to those affected. Other teams looked for how the drug was spread to these worlds and found it was Michael who was attempting to destroy the Wraith's food supply. It was also discovered that a clone was made of Carson Beckett. (ATL: "The Kindred, Part 1", "The Kindred, Part 2")
A new commander
Richard Woolsey became the new leader of the expedition as Keller became infected with a Wraith pathogen which began to spread out into the city. The expedition was later infiltrated by Michael and his hybrids who attempted to take Teyla's baby Torren and destroy the city, however he was killed before his plan could be enacted. When it was discovered that the Wraith had created a new ZPM-powered Hive ship and had learned the location of Earth, the expedition prepared the city to leave and return to help defend Earth. The hive was destroyed, the city, low on power, landed on Earth. The expedition continued their work on Earth. (ATL: "The Seed", "The Prodigal", "Remnants", "Enemy at the Gate", Stargate: Extinction)
Alternate Timelines
- In an alternate timeline, the expedition arrived on Atlantis, which had very low power. The shield started to collapse quickly and the city began flooding. The expedition tried to fix the problem but many of them were trapped in parts of the city and drowned. Many members took refuge in the Puddle Jumpers and Sheppard, Zelenka and Weir were in a Time-travelling Puddle Jumper and accidentally went back in time 10,000 years. (ATL: "Before I Sleep")
- In an alternate timeline, the expedition had many changes to accommodate Michael Kenmore's plan to take over the galaxy. Richard Woolsey became commander of the expedition, Keller and McKay left due the expedition stopping its humanitarian and medical efforts on other planets. The expedition eventually abandoned Atlantis. (ATL: "The Last Man")
Alternate Realities
- In an alternate reality, an alternate Rodney McKay was often called "Rod" and he was much more outgoing and different than our reality counterpart. The expedition discovered a tear in the space/time continuum above Atlantis and sent "Rod" to another reality to figure out what was happening and to stop it. He later managed to return to his reality and the tear was repaired. (ATL: "McKay and Mrs. Miller")
- In an alternate reality, John Sheppard was not part of the Atlantis expedition and a hive ship had attacked Earth but was destroyed. One of the darts pilots survived and landed on Earth, going into hiding. Some of the expedition members returned to Earth to help track him down. (ATL: "Vegas")
