Overview
Physiology
Originally the Asgard were much more humanoid, 30,000 years ago their physiology had them similar to humans in height, physical appearance and were capable of sexual reproduction through meiosis. In an effort to extend their lives, the Asgard cloned their bodies through enhanced cellular mitosis and transferred their consciousness into these new vessels whenever needed. Around a thousand years ago they lost the ability to reproduce through sexual propagation. Their new physique at this time was much shorter and less humanoid then they originally were, with thin legs and arms, large craniums, black eyes and a lack of an adrenal gland. This cloning process irreparably damaged their genome removing the physical component required for continued evolution and ascension. (SG1: "Revelations", ATL: "Allies", SG1: "Unending")
Culture
The Asgard have a very understanding and tolerant culture, friend and protector to any race that needs them, particularly humans. Despite protecting human populations, the Asgard still felt the Goa'uld deserved the same chance at life as an other race and were willing to establish a treaty with the Goa'uld to allow them to keep their territories but at the same time protect some human worlds. (SG1: "Thor's Chariot", "Fair Game")
Social Structure
Asgard society is run by the Asgard High Council who control the various facets of their fleet movements, interactions with other races and any addendum to the protected planets treaty. Among the Asgard, only two other ranks were known - ship commanders and scientists, what other ranks may exist are unknown. (SG1: "Fair Game", "Red Sky", "New Order, Part 2", "Revelations", "Fragile Balance")
Technology
Asgard technology is among the most advanced ever to exist, overshadowing the Goa'uld and in some cases surpassing that of the Ancients with hyperdrive technology, weaponry and transportation technology. Their technology is mostly comprised of Neutronium and Trinium, but also include other powerful materials such as Naquadah and minerals such as Carbon. (SG1: "Fair Game", "Unending", "Small Victories")
History
Beginnings
The Asgard evolved on Othala in the Ida galaxy. Around 30,000 years ago they began space exploration and sent an manned ship with its crew in suspended animation out into their galaxy, however its navigational computer was damaged and it drifted into the Milky Way galaxy. They later began a process of cloning their bodies to extend their life. (SG1: "Revelations")
Alliance
Eventually the Asgard made contact with the Ancients, the Furlings and the Nox and over many millennia forged an alliance. Around 10,000 years ago, the Asgard cloning process had already created problems and they were looking for a way to solve it, opting not to experiment on humans to find the solution; however a small group felt that such an action doomed their race, so they left for the Pegasus galaxy to experiment on humans, taking advantage of the war going on between the Ancients and the Wraith.
Unfortunately the Wraith won and turned their attention to these Asgard, who lost their intergalactic ships and were forced to retreat to a hostile world to hide. In the Milky Way the Asgard made contact with the Goa'uld and liberated several human worlds from their control. Unable to contend with the Asgard's advanced technology, they agreed to enter into a conditional treaty with them, allowing certain worlds to remain free from Goa'uld control and influence and be allowed to evolve and grow uninhibited. When Earth proved themselves a threat against the Goa'uld, the Asgard offered to help get them included in the treaty. (SG1: "The Fifth Race", ATL: "The Lost Tribe", SG1: "Fair Game")
War with the Replicators
Exploring an isolated planet in their home galaxy, the Asgard came across the Replicators. Not realizing the danger they posed, they took some aboard for study. The Replicators learned from the very means used to stop them and became a real threat when they started to assimilate the Asgard's knowledge. Unable to effectively fight the Replicators, the Asgard sought the help of the Tau'ri to devise a means to help them, being unable to think so "primitively". (SG1: "Nemesis", "Small Victories")
When the Asgard located the ship they sent out thousands of years ago in the Milky Way, they established a small laboratory on a hostile planet in the Milky Way, to avoid the Replicators and to study their ancient ancestors and attempt to devise a way to solve their genetic degradation. When the Goa'uld encroached on the planet, violating the protected planets treaty, Thor arrived to warn them off, only to discover that they had devised new weapons and shields that gave them superiority. Thor was captured by Anubis who probed his mind and obtained information on Asgard technology. (SG1: "Revelations")
The Asgard devised a plan to use the android body of Reese, the original creator of the Replicators, to draw all the Replicators in the universe to Othala and then trap them within a time dilation field until they were able to devise the means to stop them once and for all. However the Replicators reprogrammed the device to speed up time so the Asgard enlisted the help of SG-1 to travel to Othala and get the device working; they succeeded and the Asgard moved to another planet Orilla to rebuild. (SG1: "Menace", "Unnatural Selection", "New Order, Part 2")
When the Asgard High Council learned that Loki had restarted his experiments on humans to attempt to solve the Asgard genetic problems, they had him shut down. Later the Asgard artificially increased the mass of Hala's star and collapsed it into a black hole in order to take care of the Replicators, however they had devised a means to use the time dilation device to counter its effects, infesting Thor's ship and making their way to Orilla. The Replicators began to take over the new Asgard homeworld until Jack O'Neill using Ancient knowledge and an Asgard computer created a weapon to destroy the Replicators and free the Asgard homeworld. (SG1: "Fragile Balance", "New Order, Part 2")
The Asgard were contacted by Earth when it was discovered that an Asgard was on Earth, only to find that it had been cloned on Earth. Thor arrived to take the clone back and allow another Asgard, whose body was failing, to inhabit it. When it was discovered that the Ori were sending ships and troops through the Supergate to start a war, Kvasir helped in modifying a control crystal to dial out the Supergate and stop them from dialing in, as well as piloting his ship during the battle but the ship was destroyed. (SG1: "Covenant", "Camelot", "Flesh and Blood")
Extinction
Using a final attempt to fix their physiological problems left them all with a rapidly-progressing, uncurable disease, knowing that they faced a long drawn-out death, the Asgard decided to bestow all of their collective knowledge and technology on the Tau'ri and then sacrificed themselves and their world. (SG1: "Unending")
Pegasus Galaxy
The Vanir still searched for their solution to the genetic problems they faced, uninhibited research helped but they problem still remained. The hostile planet they lived on was slowly killing them but the threat of the Wraith kept them from venturing out into the galaxy. When they learned the location of a key they require to activate an Ancient device which would end the Wraith, they infiltrated Atlantis kidnapping Drs Daniel Jackson and Rodney McKay in the process, taking the key and using it to activate the Attero device. Once activated they prepared to leave their world and were forced into a conflict with a Traveler ship, but they managed to escape and the device was destroyed. (ATL: "First Contact", "The Lost Tribe")
