The Ark of Truth, known in Ancient as the armeria verimas, is an Ancient mental manipulation device capable of brainwashing.
Function
The device is essentially an ark with a panel on the top with a large red crystal and several buttons with Ancient letters surrounding it. When the correct code is inputted the crystal glows, the ark is then opened and light will shine out of the bottom causing anyone who views it to have their minds altered. Once the ark has completed its function, it will automatically close itself. The Ark can be programmed to manipulate minds to believe in almost anything. (Stargate: The Ark of Truth)
History
The device was built by Amelius in the Ori galaxy millions of year ago before the Alterans left. He wanted to use the ark to change the minds of the Ori but the rest of the Alteran council did not want to interfere with free will, regardless of what will happen to them. The Alterans left the galaxy and the ark remained behind.
The ascended Ancient Morgan Le Fay, posing as Merlin, showed Daniel Jackson a vision of the ark. Believing that the Ark was on Dakara, SG-1 went there to find it only to uncover a stone ark with ancient documents in them and not the actual ark.
Later, Daniel had another vision of a mountain exploding and Tomin, whom had surrendered himself to SG-1 told him of a tale of the Ori destroying evil at Ortus Mallum which was similar to the vision Daniel had. SG-1 took the Odyssey to the Ori galaxy to find the Ark.
Arriving at the planet where Celestis is located. SG-1 journeyed down to a mountain and began searching for the ark, Merlin appeared and showed Daniel the location of the entrance into the cavern the ark was in. Uncovering the ark, they were suddenly attacked by Ori soldiers who shot Teal'c in the back, took Daniel, Vala, Tomin and the ark back to Celestis.
Vala met with Adria who planned to use th ark to make everyone in the Milky Way believe the Ori were gods so she would gain all the power. When Adria was occupied, Morgan showed Daniel the code needed to activate the ark, once activated, Teal'c shot out the leg of the table the ark was on and it fell in front of the Doci. The energy from the ark transfered to all the Priors and stopped the belief in the Ori.
Adria very angry was going to kill them until Morgan showed up and engaged Adria in a battle. SG-1 took the ark back to Earth where they showed a Prior and undid all their work in our galaxy. Afterwards Daniel wanted the ark destroyed as it was too powerful but the IOA had it shipped to Area 51 for study. (Stargate: The Ark of Truth)
