The Abydos expedition was a team of military personnel who were the first official team to travel through the Earth Stargate in 1996 to the planet Abydos.
Overview
The expedition was to explore the world on the other side and perform reconnaissance. Colonel Jack O'Neill also had secret orders to discover any possible threats and if discovered was to detonate a nuclear weapon on the other side and destroy the stargate. (Stargate)

History
After the Stargate was successfully activated on Earth, a team was assembled to go through however with no means of getting home the mission was to be scrubbed until Dr. Daniel Jackson convinced General West that he could decipher the glyphs on the other Stargate in order to get the team home. On the other side the team found a massive desert and an enormous pyramid as well as a large population of humans. Soon part of the team was captured when Ra arrived on Abydos and when the rest of the team went to investigate what had happened they too were captured.
Ra attacked the humans on Abydos and was to publicly execute the team but they were saved by the Abydonians. A plan was implemented to use the nuclear weapon Colonel O'Neill had brought to destroy Ra. When Ra's forces were defeated he tried to flee in his ship but the nuclear weapon was ringed aboard and he was destroyed. The team, except for Jackson who remained because he had fallen in love with Sha'uri, returned home. (Stargate)
